Thank You, VFW
I am truly excited that the VFW, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the largest and oldest veterans service organization, will be holding their 119th National Convention in the Fifth District of Missouri.
Thousands of veterans, families and supporters will descend upon Kansas City, MO this weekend to continue their mission of servicing veterans across the world.
I’m looking forward to welcoming VFW at their national convention.
I’ve seen the remarkable work VFW and others have done for veterans. Supporters are trying to combat veteran homelessness by helping find shelters, building Tiny Homes, and helping veterans with employment and health care needs. I’ve made sure that when it comes to veterans, my office and I are responsive of their needs.
H.R. 3700, The Housing Opportunity Through Modernization Act, is a bill that I co-authored that includes a provision that would require the Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, (HUD) to appoint a Special Assistant for Veterans Affairs to oversee veteran-related programs within HUD. Additionally, the bill would also require that HUD and the VA submit an annual report to Congress regarding the type of assistance HUD has been providing to veterans. The bill also gives special assistance to veterans who are searching for housing.
Our office continues to work with HUD to support the HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) program. The HUD-VASH program combines Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) rental assistance for homeless veterans with case management and clinical services provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
I also pushed for the expansion of the VA Choice Program. Congress must continue to pass bills that benefit veterans, such as, H.R. 5671, The Burns Pits Accountability Act. Bills like this will help those who are still fighting for their proper disability ratings so that veterans can get the coverage they need.
Our work must be on-going because veterans need our continual support. It’s the least we can do.
I thank the VFW for their commitment to helping those who have given of themselves for this country.
