Congressman Cleaver Receives the Edward W. Brooke Housing Leadership Award
(Washington, D.C.) – Congressman Emanuel Cleaver, II (D-MO) last night was awarded the Edward W. Brooke Housing Leadership Award by the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC), a leading nonprofit dedicated to ensuring low-income Americans have affordable and sufficient housing. The award is named after the first black Senator popularly elected to office and was presented at NLIHC’s Annual Housing Leadership Awards Reception on March 28, 2019. Past recipients include: Senator John Kerry, Senator Patty Murry, Representative Barbara Lee, and Representative Keith Ellison.
“It’s always humbling to receive any award, but to receive this award, for a cause so near and dear to my heart, is an honor like few others,” said Congressman Cleaver.“In the 14 years I’ve been in Congress, I’ve dedicated much of my time working to ensure that every American can find and attain affordable, respectable housing. This award is a reminder that maybe some good has come from that hard work.”
The former Ranking Member of the U.S. House Committee on Financial Services’ Subcommittee on Housing and Insurance, Congressman Cleaver has introduced and passed several highly impactful housing initiatives and cemented himself as a prominent advocate on housing issues amongst his congressional colleagues. Cleaver’s Housing Choice Voucher Mobility Demonstration Act of 2019 was included into H.J.Res. 31, the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2019, which was signed into law in February of this year. This legislation allows for low-income families to relocate to low-poverty areas in an effort to provide these individuals with greater economic opportunity. In the 115th Congress, Congressman Cleaver successfully passed the Family Self Sufficiency Act, which made important updates to the Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) program, combining the FSS programs for Housing Choice Vouchers and public housing, and expanding the eligibility of the program. In the 114th Congress, Congressman Cleaver’s Housing Opportunity Through Modernization Act was passed into law. One of the most sweeping reforms to our country’s housing programs in decades, this bill was designed to improve and create additional efficiency in housing programs for low-income families.
“For the first 7 years of my life, I lived in a two-room shack with no electricity or running water. I fight for these families because I’ve walked in their shoes. Affordable housing isn’t just a roof over one’s head—which every family deserves—it’s the foundation from which these families can begin to build and prosper,” Congressman Cleaver said. “For as long as the Fifth District of Missouri sees fit, I’ll continue to advocate for these issues in the halls of Congress.”
Emanuel Cleaver, II is the U.S. Representative for Missouri’s Fifth Congressional District, which includes Kansas City, Independence, Lee’s Summit, Raytown, Grandview, Sugar Creek, Blue Springs, Grain Valley, Oak Grove, North Kansas City, Gladstone, Claycomo, and all of Ray, Lafayette, and Saline Counties. He is a member of the exclusive House Financial Services Committee, the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Housing and Insurance, and also a Senior Whip of the Democratic Caucus.
