A Congressman at Heaven's Gates

Civility Message

Dear Friends,

A veteran member of the US House, who had served as the chair of a powerful committee and had become a household name, died. Immediately after he took his last breath, he found himself at heaven's gates face-to-face with St. Peter.

St Peter: State your name
(the member gave his name)
Gabriel: What was your work?
Veteran Member: I was a 30 year member of the House of Representatives.
Gabriel: What are you here for?
Member: I want in!

St Peter: Why do you believe you deserve entrance?
Veteran Member: Well, one evening when I was walking home from last votes, I saw a homeless woman begging in the front of the Supreme Court and I gave her $5…
St Peter: Gabriel, Google his name and see if we have that incident recorded.
Gabriel: Yes sir, Brother St. Peter, it’s all here.

St Peter: What else have you done?
Veteran Member: Well, I gave a kid down on 8th St. near DC’s Eastern Market $20 after he tried to sell me a box of candy to raise money for uniforms for his little league baseball team.
St Peter: Gabriel, give me the information from his record.
Gabriel: Yes, sir, he did donate the $20 we have it in the book.

St Peter: What have you done to alter the nasty tone on Capitol Hill?
Veteran Member: Well, if you are talking about that silly notion of compromising my principles - which are in line with those of the Lord - I’m not with that, and, if I might speak for God… he’s not with it either.

St. Peter paused to think for a moment. After slight deliberation he turned to Gabriel and confessed: “I’m a bit bewildered by the candidate before us, so, Gabriel, I’ll let you decide on this one. What shall we do?” “Well, St. Peter” Gabriel replied, “Why don’t we give him the $25 back in cash, and close the gates!”
