Congressman Cleaver Announces $11,846,187 in Grant Funding From the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to Support Zero and Low Emission Transportation in Kansas City

January 9, 2025

(Kansas City, MO) – Today, U.S. Representative Emanuel Cleaver, II (D-MO) is proud to announce $11,846,187 in grant funding from President Biden’s historic Bipartisan Infrastructure Law has been awarded to support zero and low emission transportation in Kansas City. The federal funding was awarded through the Department of Transportation’s Charging and Fueling Infrastructure Grant Program, which was established by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, and will support the installation of approximately 236 electric vehicle charging ports on publicly accessible sites owned or operated by the city. Congressman Cleaver was the only federal Representative from Missouri to support the bipartisan legislation that has attracted billions in federal investments to support infrastructure improvements across Missouri.

“When I voted to support President Biden’s once-in-a-generation Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, these are the kind of investments I knew would make their way to the heart of communities throughout Missouri and the country,” said Congressman Cleaver. “Today, I’m proud to announce critical federal funding to increase and expand Kansas City’s EV charging network and advance clean transportation throughout the region. It’s not just about reducing emissions; it’s about creating good-paying jobs, improving public health, and ensuring a more sustainable future for our communities. Together, we’re driving toward a cleaner, greener, and more connected tomorrow.”

The Charging and Fueling Infrastructure Grant Program provides funding to strategically deploy publicly accessible electric vehicle charging infrastructure and other alternative fuel infrastructure in rural and low-and-moderate-income neighborhoods with low ratios of private parking or high ratios of multiunit dwellings. The program will cover Kansas City's urban, suburban, and rural areas, connecting the metropolitan electric vehicle charging network and providing broad public access to charging infrastructure.

“Because I have successfully secured federal funding for nearly a dozen EV buses for the KCATA, it is my hope some of these dollars will be dedicated to supporting the KCATA’s current and future battery electric bus fleet, ensuring we can maximize the benefits of this funding for all Kansas Citians, including those who utilize public transit,” said Congressman Cleaver.
