June 21, 2021

Nearly 49,000 Households, Covering 91% Of All Children In Missouri’s Fifth District, Could Get Up to $300 Per Child Every Month Through December Thanks to the American Rescue Plan

(Kansas City, MO) – Today, U.S. Representative Emanuel Cleaver, II (D-MO) is highlighting that advance monthly payments of the Child Tax Credit of up to $300 per month per child will begin hitting the bank accounts of Missouri families on July 15th and continue through December of this year. The expanded Child Tax Credit with advance monthly payments was passed through the American Rescue Plan with the support of Congressman Cleaver.

"Thanks to the American Rescue Plan, the expanded Child Tax Credit, which will be delivered as monthly payments starting next month, will help hardworking Missouri families keep food on the table and a roof over our children's heads," said Congressman Cleaver. "By providing this much-needed tax relief to nearly 49,000 families in my congressional district, parents will have more money to pay for groceries, childcare, school supplies, and other items that are critical to the future success of Missouri's children. I was proud to support these monthly payments through the American Rescue Plan, and I will support making them permanent should the President's American Families Plan make it to the House floor."

According to data from the House Appropriations Committee, 48,900 households, covering 91% of all children in Missouri's Fifth Congressional District, could get up to $300 per child per month starting next month through December of this year. The expanded and improved Child Tax Credit will lift 11,000 children in Missouri's Fifth Congressional District out of poverty. Nearly all families will receive their monthly payments automatically beginning on July 15 with no further action required. Families who did not file a tax return for 2019 or 2020, and who did not use the IRS Non-filers tool las year to sign up for the Economic Impact Payments, should go online and use the IRS Child Tax Credit Non-filer Sign-up Tool to ensure they receive their payments.

The American Rescue Plan, which Congressman Cleaver was proud to support, expanded the Child Tax Credit to up to $3,600 per child for children ages 0 to 5 and $3,000 per child for children ages 6 to 17. The historic relief package also authorized advance monthly payments of the Child Tax Credit through December 2021. Beginning on July 15th and running through December, qualifying families can get up to:

  • $300 a month per child for children ages 0 to 5; and
  • $250 a month per child for children ages 6 to 17.

Families will get their remaining expanded Child Tax Credit when they file their 2021 tax return.
