Congressman Cleaver Meets With IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva
(Washington, D.C.) – Yesterday, Congressman Emanuel Cleaver, II (D-MO) met with the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) new Managing Director, Kristalina Georgieva. As chairman of the Financial Services Subcommittee on National Security, International Development, and Monetary Policy (NSIDMP), Congressman Cleaver was pleased to sit down with Director Georgieva to discuss important issues facing the global economy such as the coronavirus outbreak, the rise in digital currencies around the world, and the economic impact of climate change. With a self-stated mission "to ensure the stability of the international monetary system," The IMF falls under the jurisdiction of the NSIDMP Subcommittee, which Congressman Cleaver chairs.
"I want to thank Director Georgieva for graciously meeting with me to discuss some of the most pressing issues facing the world economy today," said Congressman Cleaver. "Whether it's the coronavirus, the long-term costs of climate change, or the issues arising from the growth of digital currencies, there are many potential threats to the world economy as we begin this new decade. Our discussion left me confident the IMF, under her leadership, will be prepared to take on any challenges we may face, and I look forward to working with Director Georgieva and the IMF to ensure the world economy continues to grow with the United States leading the way."
Last September, Kristalina Georgieva was selected to serve as IMF Managing Director and Chair of the Executive Board for a five-year term. From Bulgaria, Director Georgieva is the first person from an emerging market economy to lead the IMF. Before her selection to lead the IMF, Georgieva had been the CEO of the World Bank.
