Congressman Cleaver Secures Another $6 Million For Missouri’s Fifth Congressional District as Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Subcommittee Approves Appropriations Bill
(Kansas City, MO) – Today, the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies passed their Fiscal Year 2022 appropriations bill to fund the Department of Labor, Department of Health and Human Services, Department of Education, and related government agencies. Included in the appropriations bill was $6 million requested by U.S. Representative Emanuel Cleaver, II (D-MO) to fund three separate projects in the Fifth Congressional District of Missouri.
"As we have seen over the past year, investments in public health and education are critical to local communities in Missouri and across the country—and never more so than now," said Congressman Cleaver. "I am thrilled that I was able to secure $6 million for projects that will combat the opioid epidemic, improve public health infrastructure, and ensure underserved communities have the funding for services that all Americans need and deserve. While we still have work to do to ensure this bill makes it across the finish line, I will continue to fight for federal funding that will improve the lives of Missouri families."
In April, Congressman Cleaver requested funding for three separate projects in the Fifth Congressional District of Missouri related to the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Subcommittee. All three of the projects were included in legislation that was just approved by the subcommittee, including:
- $2,000,000 for Truman Medical Centers to create a state-of-the-art substance use treatment center in the heart of Kansas City's UMKC Health Sciences District;
- $2,000,000 for the Health Care Coalition of Rural Missouri to improve services in Lexington, Missouri and Buckner, Missouri; and
- $2,000,000 for Missouri Valley College to build a new 17,000 square foot Health Professions Building to house the Nursing Program and ultimately other health care profession programs.
"Whether it is the Urban Core in Kansas City or rural towns throughout Missouri, following the COVID-19 pandemic, it is clear that we must do more to support public health in the United States, particularly in Missouri" said Congressman Cleaver. "This $6 million will go a long way toward helping Missouri families stay healthy, which will allow our communities to thrive. I want to thank the Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies for understanding the importance of these projects, and I'm hopeful the full committee will as well."
The legislation will now be taken up by the full House Committee on Appropriations before being considered by the House of Representatives. Once the bill is approved in the House of Representatives, it will need to be passed by the Senate before being signed into law by President Biden.
