Congressman Cleaver’s Statement After Voting Against Impeaching Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas

February 7, 2024

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Representative Emanuel Cleaver, II (D-MO) voted against the impeachment of Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and released the following statement after the vote.

“Despite bipartisan opposition from lawmakers and legal scholars alike, House Republicans, at the direction of Donald Trump and Marjorie Taylor Greene, attempted to impeach Secretary Mayorkas to distract from their decision to walk away from a bipartisan security supplemental that invests in border security, takes a major step to fix our broken immigration system, and defends our democratic allies around the world.

“Such naked, cynical partisanship is the height of irresponsibility and undermines America’s national security at a time when authoritarians around the world are watching our resolve; and to smear the name of a good and decent man—including resorting to antisemitic tropes—who has served our nation with honor and to the best of his ability as a part of that effort is downright shameful.”

“The falsification and dehumanization of our colleagues in government must not become a part of regular order in Congress. The American people deserve better than the chaos and divisiveness that House Republicans are trying to manufacture in the hopes it will help Donald Trump politically. Unfortunately, as they’ve demonstrated for more than a year now, that appears to be all they can offer hardworking families.”
