Congressman Cleaver’s Statement on the Retirement of HUD Secretary Marcia Fudge

March 13, 2024

(Washington, D.C.)Today, U.S. Representative Emanuel Cleaver, II (D-MO) released the following statement after Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Marcia Fudge announced her retirement this week.

“Whether in local government, Congress or at the Department of Housing and Urban Development, Marcia Fudge has been a champion for hardworking families and underserved communities for decades, working tirelessly to support the needs of American families in every corner of the country.

“Under her leadership at HUD, Secretary Fudge helped more than 2 million families stay in their homes and avoid foreclosure, assisted roughly 1.2 million individuals experiencing homelessness, funded the construction of more than 2 million units of public and multifamily housing, and relentlessly advanced the vision of fair and affordable housing for all.

“Parade Park, a 500-unit affordable housing development which sits on the front porch of downtown Kansas City, would never be redeveloped with community input if not for the efforts of Secretary Fudge, and I’m incredibly grateful for her partnership in working with our community to preserve one of the nation’s oldest black-owned housing cooperatives.

“From investing in America’s affordable housing stock, to enforcing fair housing laws, to leading the charge against homelessness in the United States, and so much more, Secretary Fudge is a testament to the impact that public servants can have on our communities, and the entire country owes her a debt of gratitude for her service to the nation.

“As she enters the next chapter of her remarkable life, I wish her the best, along with a happy and peaceful retirement.”
