Rep. Cleaver Appointed to Financial Services Committee, Elected as Ranking Member of Subcommittee on Housing and Insurance
(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Representative Emanuel Cleaver, II (D-MO) announced he has been appointed to serve on the House Committee on Financial Services for a tenth term and was elected by committee Democrats to serve as the Ranking Member on the Subcommittee on Housing and Insurance. Additionally, Congressman Cleaver will serve on the Financial Services Subcommittee on Capital Markets. All committee assignments are subject to final approval by the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee.
“Having spent the first seven years of my life in a two-room shack with no indoor plumbing or electricity, and then another three years in public housing, it’s difficult to express how important the issue of housing is to me personally, and I am grateful that my committee colleagues have entrusted me with the immense responsibility of once again leading the Subcommittee on Housing and Insurance for the Democratic Caucus and delivering for our communities,” said Congressman Cleaver. “Our first priority must be to lower housing costs for hardworking families, so that every American has a safe, stable and affordable place to rest their head at night. As the House Committee on Financial Services gets to work, I am committed to working with my Republican colleagues to meet the needs of my constituents in the Fifth Congressional District of Missouri and Americans across the country.”
Last Congress, As Chairman of the Subcommittee on Housing, Community Development, and Insurance, Rep. Cleaver helped usher several legislative proposals through his subcommittee, including historic housing provisions from the Build Back Better Act—which were passed by the House of Representatives. Additionally, Chairman Cleaver’s Stabilizing Rural Homeowners During COVID Act was included in the American Rescue Plan Act and signed into law by President Biden, providing millions in relief to rural homeowners participating in the USDA’s Direct Home Loan and Housing Repair Loan programs.
Chairman Cleaver also partnered with the Biden administration on key executive actions, including the administration’s work to reduce mortgage fees for first-time homebuyers and those with low or moderate incomes, helping to bring down interest rates and expanding opportunities for affordable homeownership. The Biden administration also used Chairman Cleaver’s Real Estate Valuation Fairness and Improvement Act as a foundation for their Property Appraisal and Valuation Equity (PAVE) Interagency Task Force, a historic initiative to combat disparities in home appraisals.
Rep. Cleaver also has a history of working with Republicans on bipartisan legislation in the Housing Subcommittee. As Ranking Member in 2016, Cleaver co-wrote and helped pass the Housing Opportunity Through Modernization Act, one of the most significant bipartisan housing bills in recent history.
