Rep. Cleaver Makes Friendly Wager on AFC Championship Game with Rep. Mfume

January 26, 2024

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Representative Emanuel Cleaver, II (D-MO) made a friendly wager with Baltimore Representative Kweisi Mfume (D-MD) on the outcome of the AFC Championship Game this Sunday. When the Kansas City Chiefs win, Rep. Mfume will provide Maryland crab cakes from Jimmy’s Famous Seafood. Should the Baltimore Ravens get extraordinarily lucky and win the conference championship, Rep. Cleaver will provide some world-class Kansas City barbecue from Gates BBQ.

“Congressman Mfume is a dear friend, remarkable representative, and an upstanding American citizen—which is why it pains me to know he will have to watch his favorite football team fall to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs this Sunday,” said Congressman Cleaver. “However, it is simply inevitable that the Chiefs will march on to their third Super Bowl in six years, and I must admit that I can’t wait to devour some of Maryland’s finest crab cakes, courtesy of Rep. Mfume, when they do!”

“Congressman Cleaver is my friend, a distinguished member of Congress, and an accomplished former Mayor of Kansas City who is not shy about cheering for his team. Despite his football team’s indisputable success over the last six years, I confidently accept the Congressman’s friendly wager,” said Congressman Mfume. “I, along with the entire city of Baltimore, am ready to go all in on our Ravens team led by Lamar Jackson! With our disciplined offense, ferocious defense, and a packed M&T Bank Stadium, Kansas City should keep its team plane engine running because it’s going to be a short, unfulfilling stay in Baltimore. I am willing to put fresh, Maryland crab cakes from Jimmy’s Famous Seafood on the line. We will be ready for you Sunday, Kansas City,” he concluded.

Emanuel Cleaver, II is the U.S. Representative for Missouri's Fifth Congressional District, which includes Kansas City, Independence, Lee's Summit, Raytown, Grandview, Sugar Creek, Greenwood, Blue Springs, North Kansas City, Gladstone, and Claycomo. He is a member of the exclusive House Financial Services Committee and Ranking Member of the House Subcommittee on Housing and Insurance.
