Rep. Cleaver Participates In FSC Field Hearing On Modern-Day Redlining

March 6, 2020

(Queens, NY) – Today, United States Representative Emanuel Cleaver, II (D-MO), Chairman of the Subcommittee on National Security, International Development, and Monetary Policy, participated in a Financial Services Committee field hearing on modern-day redlining. The field hearing was chaired by Congressman Gregory W. Meeks (D-NY), Chairman of the Subcommittee on Consumer Protection and Financial Institutions.

"People tend to talk about redlining as if it's a thing of the past, a problem from a previous generation. Sadly, as Congressman Meeks' analysis bears out, this remains a serious obstacle for black and brown communities in Queens, Kansas City, and across the nation," said Congressman Cleaver. "I'm thankful to Congressman Meeks for hosting today's field hearing to highlight the issue and hear from people committed to extending banking services to the communities who need it most. As we seek to protect and strengthen the Community Reinvestment Act in our effort to combat modern-day redlining, I'm certain today's discussion will be exceedingly valuable."

Participating in the field hearing with Congressmen Cleaver and Meeks were Reps. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), Al Green (D-TX), Yvette Clarke (D-NY), and Kathleen Rice (D-NY). The lawmakers heard testimony from a panel of affordable housing and banking experts, including from the Association for Neighborhood and Housing Development (ANHD), Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America (NACA), National Association for Latino Community Asset Builders (NALCAB), and the National Bankers Association, among others.
