Rep. Cleaver’s Statement in Support of Continuing Resolution to Avoid Another Senseless Shutdown
(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Representative Emanuel Cleaver, II (D-MO) released the following statement after the House of Representatives passed another Continuing Resolution to keep the government open and avoid a senseless shutdown.
“Due to a minor procedure on my knee, I was unable to vote for the Continuing Resolution that was passed by the House of Representatives and U.S. Senate earlier this afternoon. While I have always said that Continuing Resolutions are an awful way to govern, a shutdown of the federal government—and all the critical services it provides to America’s children, families, and seniors—is simply unacceptable.
“For that reason, I would have supported the legislation to prevent another harmful shutdown had I voted today. Now, it is imperative that lawmakers across the political spectrum come together, negotiate in good-faith, and pass a bipartisan budget that will meet the needs of our communities. I look forward assisting in achieving that goal when the House returns to Washington.”
