Rep. Cleaver’s Statement on Trump Administration’s Shameful Meeting with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy

(Kansas City, MO) – Today, U.S. Representative Emanuel Cleaver, II (D-MO), member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, which monitors human rights and international cooperation in the 57 countries of the OSCE, released the following statement after the Trump Administration’s shameful meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy this afternoon.

“Today’s behavior from President Trump and Vice President Vance is the most embarrassing and shameful I’ve ever witnessed from the Oval Office. American leadership publicly siding with a dictator in Vladimir Putin, while berating a democratic friend in Ukraine and President Zelenskyy, will not be forgotten by any nation around the world, and only benefits Russia, China, and other adversaries.

“Despite the ignorance of our current administration, Americans know that the Ukrainian people are standing on the front lines in the fight for freedom and democracy around the world—and we know that their sacrifices are strengthening security for all freedom-loving countries, including the United States.

“I will continue to stand with our Ukrainian friends as they resist Putin’s despicable invasion, and I hope that Republicans in Congress will do the same.”
