Reps. Cleaver, Davids Announce Over $90.9 Million From American Rescue Plan To Support Public Transit in Kansas City

March 31, 2021

(Kansas City, MO) – Today, United States Representatives Emanuel Cleaver, II (D-MO) and Sharice Davids (D-KS) announced over $90.9 million in American Rescue Plan funding will go toward supporting transit projects in the Greater Kansas City Area. The funding includes a $24.7 million Capital Investment Grant for the Kansas City Streetcar Main Street Extension Project, which ensures the project is now fully funded.

"After a year of budget cuts and inadequate funding due to the coronavirus pandemic, I'm thrilled to announce that Help Is Here for Kansas City's transit systems," said Congressman Cleaver. "With this crucial funding, the KC Streetcar, which has played a major role in transporting Kansas Citians for free during much of the pandemic, will now have the necessary funding for the Main Street Extension Project, making transit more accessible to all Kansas Citians. I was proud to support this funding through the American Rescue Plan, and I will continue to advocate for investments like this that stimulate the local economy and create good-paying jobs in the community."

"The American Rescue Plan is already bringing much needed relief and support to the KC Metro, including for our transit systems," said Representative Davids. "The KC Streetcar has played a vital role in the Metro region—bolstering our local economy, supporting manufacturing jobs, and connecting people to opportunities across our community. With this critical funding from the American Rescue Plan, the KC Streetcar Main Street Extension Project will have the resources necessary to help our economy recover from this crisis and reach even more Kansas Citians."

The Greater Kansas City Area will receive the following transit funding from the American Rescue Plan:

  • $66,051,552 for Kansas City, Missouri and Kansas City, Kansas transit systems via Section 5307;
  • $24,673,482 for the Kansas City Streetcar Main Street Extension Project via a Capital Investment Grant; and
  • $237,776 for Enhanced Mobility of Seniors and Individuals with Disabilities in Kansas City, Missouri and Kansas City, Kansas.
