(Washington, D.C.) – Congressman Emanuel Cleaver, II released the following statement regarding the Supreme Court's decision to uphold the travel ban which denies visas to nationals of six Muslim-majority countries. The lower courts struck down three previous versions of the travel ban. The Supreme Court announced its decision with a vote of 5-4 today on the case of Trump v. Hawaii.

"I am troubled by the Supreme Court's decision to uphold the travel ban. President Trump's travel ban on specific countries undoubtedly targets Muslims. It is discriminatory and immoral. For the Supreme Court to uphold such a ban is an endorsement of further discrimination and religious intolerance. It is shameful.

When the travel ban was ordered during President Trump's first year in office, I held a town hall in Kansas City, Missouri focusing specifically on immigration and the executive orders signed by the President. Thousands of people attended concerned about how the travel ban, then and now, would devastate families, rip them from their loved ones and encourage people to fear and develop animosity toward Muslims. Make no mistake, we cannot allow our country to ban people solely because of their religion or nationality."
