KANSAS CITY, MO - Congressman Emanuel Cleaver, II (MO-05) will host U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julián Castro in Kansas City, MO, on Monday to announce major funding awards that will revitalize distressed neighborhoods and increase opportunity for low-income residents.
WASHINGTON, DC – Today Congressman Cleaver is thrilled to announce that President Barack Obama, in coordination with the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and Secretary Julian Castro, has chosen Kansas City to participate in their new digital inclusion program called ConnectHome. This initiative aims to increase broadband access for children and families living in HUD-assisted housing in 28 communities across the country.
This week was a big week for our efforts to bridge the digital divide in Missouri’s Fifth District. President Obama in coordination with the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced that they have chosen Kansas City to participate in their new digital inclusion program that they rolled out this week. The program is ConnectHome and it aims to increase broadband Internet access for children and families who live in HUD-assisted housing. Kansas City is one of 28 communities across the country that will have the opportunity to participate in this initiative.

Today, Congressman Emanuel Cleaver, II welcomed Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Julián Castro to Kansas City, Missouri. Congressman Cleaver, as Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Housing and Insurance, invited Secretary Castro to see firsthand the significant housing work being done in Missouri's Fifth District and to highlight the continued need for HUD support in future housing endeavors.
A Helping Hand
When I look back to how my family got to where we are now, it was the help we received from the government, living in public housing, for six years, until my father could save enough money to buy a home. There are tens of thousands of other stories, just like that, where people needed a helping hand, received a helping hand, and now they use their time to extend that hand to help others.
Cleaver signaled support for affordable housing, energy efficient housing, and bridging the digital divide in his remarks
Congressman Emanuel Cleaver, II (D-MO) today spoke to attendees at Habitat for Humanity's annual conference. In his remarks, Congressman Cleaver emphasized the need to expand affordable housing, to increase both rural and urban development, and to encourage energy efficient and green housing. Rep. Cleaver received a standing ovation following his speech. U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julián Castro also offered remarks.
