Dear Friends,

There is absolutely nothing that stunts the momentum of a democracy and hammers the heart and soul of the body politic like political absolutism. It is scary when anyone suggests that they understand and that they are doing God’s will in public office. My certainty is that there is great annoyance in Heaven when we, Members of Congress, view ourselves special agents of God.

Yesterday, I, along with my colleague Congressman Cedric L. Richmond of Louisiana introduced House Resolution 696. This resolution honors the heritage of jazz in the United States, acknowledging the seeds of jazz and its evolution into a signature American sound.

As you know, Kansas City, Missouri, is known as the place where musical geniuses, such as Charles “Yard Bird” Parker, Count Basie, Mary Lou Williams and countless others, lived and perfected their style of jazz in the historic 18th and Vine District.

On Tuesday, we marked Equal Pay Day, the day when, more than three months into the year, women’s wages finally catch up to what men were paid in the previous year. Once again, I call on all Members of Congress to come together in support of the passage of the critical Paycheck Fairness Act. More must be done to close the wage gap that still exists between women and men.

Dear Friends,

A woman walked up to the supervising pharmacist in a major drug store and said, “You are the top guy here are you not?”

“Yes,” said the man, wearing a long white hospital looking coat.

“Well,” said the woman, “I need a big bottle of arsenic.”

“Ma’am, arsenic is a very dangerous substance so I must ask you – why do you need it?” he said.

“To poison my no-good cheating husband,” she replied.

Each Spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation in each congressional district. This year, students from the 5th Congressional District have submitted over 200 art entries in the competition entitled, "A Voyage of Artistic Discovery".

"I am eager to recognize and showcase the artistic talent of high school students in my Congressional District and across the country," said Congressman Emanuel Cleaver.
