Today's "EC from DC" comes a day early and will be slightly shorter than normal. Two of the Western world's great religions overlap in ceremonies of faith this week. Passover began at sunset on Monday, and the Christian calendar culminates in Easter this Sunday. As tomorrow is Good Friday in my faith tradition, you are getting this abbreviated newsletter today to remind you that amongst these great celebrations of faith and family, we are hosting our monthly "Coffee with Cleaver" on Saturday morning. I do hope you can join me.

Join me Saturday for Coffee with Cleaver near the River Market

Since taking office, I have visited a coffee shop once a month. In every part of the District, from Lone Jack to Sugar Creek, Midtown to Lee's Summit, it has become a great way for me to hear the concerns of the people I am proud to serve. This month's coffee is hosted by K City Coffee House, on 412 Delaware, Ste. B, in the historic Kansas City River Market. Please come by this Saturday from 8-10 AM to share your thoughts with me, one-on-one over a cup of coffee.

Winds of Change

cleaver

It was my pleasure to join the management and fine union steel workers of Milbank manufacturing, right here in Missouri's Fifth District to cut the ribbon on a 120 foot wind turbine, which towers over the company's training center in the East bottoms. This is the first wind turbine of its size in Kansas City.

The wind turbine produces enough energy to power 75-percent of the company's 65,000 square foot training center. The company is saving money off the machine, but they are mostly making money and growing their business by retooling to meet the demands of an alternative energy future. Milbank started selling wind turbines about a year ago.

Prior to last year, Milbank was focused on making sockets for the meter on the side of a house, but a poor construction market had the company looking towards renewable energy.

It is exciting to see an 84-year-old company like Milbank adjust and embrace the future. As I toured their production facility and saw such a well-paid and diverse union workforce, I could not have been more proud of what continues to happen right here. Milbank is already looking to  expand their workforce, which means more green jobs now, and in the future.

Congratulations to Lavon Winkler, the President and CEO of Milbank Manufacturing and all the hard-working men and women who are making the company a local success story.
