The stuffed, green tigers dotting the landscape near the new Troost Pedestrian Bridge caught more than a few eyes this week, as motorists slowed to take two and three quick looks. The tigers represent the TIGER grant that made the funding of the bridge possible. And why the green? Because the project was 'green' from start to finish.
Tomorrow is Good Friday. In my faith tradition, this is a solemn and special day. Christians will celebrate Easter on Sunday, as our Jewish brothers and sisters celebrate Passover, which began at sunset on Monday, and which will come to an end on Tuesday.
Kansas City – “My heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to all of the families and friends of those shot and killed yesterday in the senseless, horrendous, and hate-filled targeting of children and seniors, simply because of their faith. Kansas City -- Congressman Emanuel Cleaver, II today announced a series of extraordinary awards to help individuals and families experiencing homelessness in the entire metropolitan area.
The U.S. Housing and Urban Development has made available $26,026,991 in grants to renew support for 113 local homeless housing and service programs in Missouri. Provided through HUD's Continuum of Care Program, the funding will ensure these local projects continue to serve communities most in need, and continue to provide support to the most vulnerable.
This week I was pleased to announce that our collaborative and hard-fought efforts here at home, and in Washington, have paid off. Kansas City got two big wins this week! One of them is a critical move forward in getting back on the list for funding to fight everything from terrorism to tornadoes.
Kansas City – Congressman Emanuel Cleaver, II, is pleased to announce efforts to secure and restore federal funding for Kansas City have been successful. The grants are to fight terrorism and assist in emergency preparedness, and Kansas City won big in both areas.
Today, the United States Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency announced its list of cities receiving grants. The awards are for the State Homeland Security Program, and the Urban Areas Security Initiative (UASI).
Kansas City - Congressman Emanuel Cleaver, II received a standing ovation from a crowd of more than 100 area residents, following his passionate speech pushing Missourians to support the expansion of Medicaid.
"This is not just a medical issue," said U.S. Representative Cleaver, "this is a moral issue. Fact-free debate and political partisanship have no place being injected into this issue, the hardworking people of Missouri's Fifth District deserve better. Much better."

People working full time jobs should not have to raise their families in poverty. This week I fought hard in Washington to bring the issue of raising the minimum wage to the House Floor for a vote. And I will continue to do this.
