Washington, D.C. – Today, the House of Representatives passed legislation that would increase the size of the 435-member House on most matters by giving votes to Delegates from four U.S. territories and the District of Columbia.
Washington D.C. — The 2007 Annual National Prayer Breakfast will be co-chaired by U.S. Representative Emanuel Cleaver, II (D-MO). Only a freshman Representative, Cleaver has served since his election in 2004 as Secretary of the House’s weekly prayer meetings.
“It is a great honor to be asked to chair this amazing event. Though I am a Methodist minister, my sincere hope is to make it inclusive and exciting to all faiths. Prayer is a universal language, and I will do everything I can to make it an event that brings people together to celebrate what we have in common.” Cleaver said.
I am excited to be in Washington to witness for the second time the State of the Union. This is a uniquely American event --- required in the genius of the Constitution --- not as spectacle, but as an act of reverence. "He shall from time to time give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union, and recommend to their Consideration such Measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient." Our founders wanted the Chief Executive to come and report to the people…and so tonight I am honored to take part in this amazing American tradition.
